Bilingual Means Two: Assessment Issues, Early Literacy and Two Language Children

Publisher Washington, DC: National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education
Summary This paper discusses issues in assessment and development of early literacy in children who are two-language learners. Included in the paper are summaries of specific research studies that address each of the identified issues. Specifically, this paper will address the following concepts: (1) assessment must combine concepts known in the first language with concepts being learned in the second language; (2) assessment for two-language children must consider how two languages interact; and (3) there are differences, as well as similarities, in emergent reading and writing behaviors of Spanish-speaking children. Implications of the above concepts for literacy instruction for Spanish/English emerging bilinguals will also be presented.

Boundaries and Selves in the Making of 'Science'

Publisher Research in Science Education, 30(1)
Page Numbers 43-55
Summary This chapter is about some practices of people actively engaged in what they call "science." The groups and actors described here, including the author, mean different things by "science," and do different things with it. Yet, in one way or another, all are at work regulating a normative boundary -- determining what counts as science and science education in contemporary U.S. society.

Defusing Environmental Education: An Evaluation of the Critique of the Environmental Education Movement

Institution: Lewis & Clark College Graduate School of Professional Studies

The growth of environmental education programs nationwide has been criticized – and in some places, blunted by restrictive state laws – by researchers who accuse such programs of bias against industry and for catastrophic interpretations of environmental threats. While some of the criticism can help the field improve, the leading critics weaken their case by focusing exclusively on texts without regard to what happens in the classroom. Moreover, the critics are frequently funded by sources that appear to have an ideological or commercial motiviation to minimize evidence of industrial damage to the environment.

A recently circulated speech by former Education Secretary William Bennett on "The State and Future of American Education" appears founded less on any close examination of the actual state of American schools than on a deep disregard for any form of public education at all.

Author: Gerald Bracey

American policy-makers are turning to high-stakes tests to measure the performance of their schools. But fears that schools aren't measuring up aren't warranted by the data, and testing is actually hurting school curricula.

Professor Alex Molnar argues that "Exclusive Agreements And Incentive Programs may be doing more harm than good: One of the most disturbing trends is schools attempting to raise money by engaging in activities that undermine their curricular message and, in some instances, promote unhealthy student lifestyles."
