Comment: Jack Kaplan's new study of SAT teaching

Publisher Chance, 15(1)
Page Numbers 7-8
Summary The commentary on Jack Kaplan's study asserts that the main message from Kaplan's study is that the quality of SAT coaching matters. Coaching that is above average in quality should be expected to produce associated score gains that are also above average. This is an intuitively plausible argument, and the results from Kaplan's study are suggestive along these lines. The commentary also submits, however, that beyond intuitive appeal, there is a dearth of evidence to make this argument empirically compelling.

Free Market Free-for-All

Author: Kenneth R. Howe
Source: Education Week

Distinguished Professor Kenneth Howe of the University of Colorado at Boulder argues that recent efforts by policy marketers to blur the distinction between educational research and educational advocacy for partisan policy preferences are denigrating the value of "value neutral" research in democratic policy-making, sullying the research enterprise, and violating the public trust.

Free Market Free-for-All

Publisher Education Week on the Web, 21(30)
Page Numbers 32-35
Summary As Congress prepares to reauthorize federal programs in educational research, there is a growing controversy within the field over whether advocacy has a place in such research. Beneath the surface are telltale signs of an especially disturbing new competitor in conceptions of the role of this research, one that jettisons the idea of educational research as a source of objective information for policymaking, and mangles it into a tool for marketing partisan policy preferences.
