VA: Savings from pushing English-learners out questionable

Predicted ESOL savings debated

Washington Post  May 13, 2008

A crackdown on illegal immigration that was expected to cause English-language learners to migrate to other districts has not resulted in the savings anticipated by the Prince William County officials who voted for the plan.  School district officials say that the departure of nearly 760 ESOL students has not brought the $6 million dollar savings estimated by the chairman of the Prince William Board of County Commissioners.  The Chairman, Corey Stewart, says that the school district should not look at the short term budget impact, but that the savings will come over time as te district adjusts teacher allocations and reduces transportation costs.
