The proposal for a "chair of conservative thought and policy" at the University of Colorado-Boulder has sparked debate. Chancellor Bud Peterson defends the $9 million in funding proposed for this position (which will pay $200,000) as an opportunity to bring scholarly knowledge about the works of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Alexander Hamilton to the campus. Opponents claim that political leanings should not be considered in hiring professors, and that the university needs to devote resources elsewhere due to its dire financial situation.
